Overview of Role: Step into the Spotlight

Disney Theatrical Group is excited to announce a new position for an Assistant Musical Director (AMD) to join the current Musical Department at The Lion King, London!

As Assistant Musical Director, you’ll report to the Musical Director and Associate Musical Director. Your focus will be on supporting the Musical Department in maintaining the musical integrity, quality, and consistency of this long running production. The AMD will conduct performances when required, attend rehearsals, hold sessions with cast members, and ensure musical standards are upheld in line with the show’s original material and direction.

Responsibilities and Duties: Backstage Brilliance

  • Conduct performances as required.
  • Serve as a standby conductor for four performances per week, remaining on-site throughout to cover in case of illness, emergency, or other absence.
  • Provide feedback and notes to the orchestra, cast, and technical departments as required to maintain musical standards.
  • Attend weekly rehearsals as required according to the schedule, including put-ins, understudy and cover rehearsals, and music calls for new or returning company members.
  • Support the Musical Director in teaching, coaching, and maintaining musical accuracy and style for all cast members.
  • Work closely with Stage Management, Company Management, and other departments to ensure rehearsals run efficiently and align with the production schedule.
  • Assist in preparing for and attending all marketing events as required.
  • Attend Production and Creative department meetings as necessary.
  • Liaise with the Musical Director, Associate Musical Director, and General Management regarding any musical concerns or notes.
  • Work in accordance with the Health & Safety Policy and maintain an excellent working knowledge of all relevant Health & Safety legislation and best practices, liaising closely with Disney’s Health & Safety Manager to ensure compliance.

  • Background: Experience in a similar role within a large-scale musical production, working alongside an international cast, is highly desirable.
  • Communication: Clear, confident communication and decision making essential.
  • Problem-Solving: Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to use initiative effectively, particularly in high-pressure situations.
  • Calm Under Pressure: Able to handle issues that arise during performances with focus, professionalism, and composure.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Excellent relationship-building and interpersonal skills with cast, creative, and production teams.
  • Leadership: Transparent and open approach, able to work well under pressure, and enjoy leading from the front and by example.
  • Integrity & Confidentiality: Full awareness of the need for integrity and confidentiality in all aspects of the role.

Additional Information

  • Contract Type: Fixed-Term
  • Weekly Schedule:
    – 1x Conduct as required
    – 3-4x Standby Conducts (3x in weeks where conducting)
    – Up to 24 rehearsal hours
  • Rehearsals: Rehearsals will take place during the day.
  • Schedule: Weekend and evening work are integral to Conducts/Standby Conducts (Tuesday to Sunday show schedule).
  • Health & Safety: This role will require the candidate to understand and follow the Health and Safety Rules & Regulation.
