Role Summary

Role Summary  The COO will support the Executive Director in the leadership, management and day to day operation of The Old Vic, making a significant contribution to the strategic planning of the organisation with a strong focus on operational activity. The main responsibility of the role is to ensure that the right people, processes, technology and infrastructure are in place to deliver The Old Vic’s plan strategically and operationally, whilst continuously driving improvements in cost, efficiency, safety and sustainability. The COO may also be required to participate in key fundraising events and attend meetings with donors where appropriate and act as an ambassador for The Old Vic. The Team The COO will also work as part of the Senior Management Team and with the Board. The role will oversee the work of the HR and Inclusion, Operations and Capital project teams.

Job Specification

Areas of responsibility    A brief summary of the key responsibilities of this role are: Business & Finance planning With the Executive Director, leading The Old Vic’s business planning process ensuring coherence and cross collaboration in the implementation of the plan, working closely with the CFO to ensure financial sustainability. Work in step with the Executive Director and the CFO to ensure the financial health of the organisation, ensuring that The Old Vic resources are managed effectively and efficiently, and suggest income streams and opportunities to ensure the financial stability and sustainability of the theatre. Capital and Major Projects Project Director for The Annex & Back of House Upgrades Project through the design process, construction, and delivery, acting as the client representative with the Project Managers and Architects. Manage the project budget, working closely with Finance on expenditure and Development on income. Work closely with Development Director on the fundraising strategy for the project. Reviewing applications, meeting donors where required. Drafting the business plan for The Annex, including working closely with the CMO on branding and marketing of The Annex. Manage The Annex Committee, preparing for meetings as required and providing updates to the OVTT Board. Manage and support the delivery of the annual capital maintenance plan (including technical infrastructure). Work on other major projects as required Operations Oversee the Operations team in the delivery of the following: A customer service focussed team that welcomes audiences and maximises secondary spend income Maintenance and security of the 205 year old building, alongside compliance of The Old Vic’s Health and Safety plan. Compliance with all relevant legislation and regulations. Management of operational risks, opportunities and issues. HR & Inclusion Work with the HR Director and Inclusion and Access Lead to oversee and support the workforce, inclusion and wellbeing strategy. Work with the Inclusion & Access Lead to support the ambition to create a public space and workplace where everyone feels welcome and able to work to the best of their abilities and that demographically is more reflective of the diverse community in which we work, our national reach and our international audience. Ensure that the Cultural Statement is embedded into practice and that the work of the theatre more broadly represents inclusive best practice and safeguards all those who work with The Old Vic. Compliance and governance Work closely with the Executive Director and the Chair to manage relationships between the Board, sub-committees, the American Associates of The Old Vic, the Old Vic Endowment Trust, and senior staff at The Old Vic which enables Trustees to fulfil their duties. The COO will be a member of the Remuneration Committee. This is not an exhaustive list of duties and the theatre’s management may, at any time, allocate other tasks which are of a similar nature or level.  Person Criteria The following essential criteria: Experience in leading and developing multifunctional teams Experience leading complex and/or large scale organisation wide change or transformation projects Experience leading strategies delivering long term organisational and operational change Operations management experience Experience of designing, delivering and evaluating major projects Experience of working with boards and committees, and of representing an organisation to external stakeholders Experience managing complex budgets and proficient in analysing numerical and financial data High level of attention to detail Knowledgeable on matters of inclusion, including proven experience of applying inclusion best practice to the delivery of day to day projects Ability to influence peers, colleagues and work well collaboratively both internally and externally Keen interest and knowledge of the theatre or arts environment
