Contract Type: Full-time, fixed term contract for one year with the option to extend.

Dates of Employment: 20 January 2026 – 17 January 2027

Location: Duchess Theatre, Catherine Street, London, WC2B 5LA.

Show Schedule: 7:30pm Tuesday – Saturday, 2:30pm Saturday, and 3pm & 7pm Sunday.

Salary: £850.28 based on 8 performances a week, plus Sunday Performance payments as per the SOLT/Equity agreement.

Holiday: As per the SOLT/Equity agreement.

Probationary Period: 12 Weeks.

Responsible To: Company Stage Manager and General Manager.

Applicants should have proven experience as, or covering for, the CSM. The role requires someone who has exceptional people skills and can work in a highly pressured environment. A very strong knowledge of Health and Safety procedures would be desirable due to the physicality of the show. Last minute cast changes are normal on this production, so applicants must be able to adapt quickly. Applicants must be able to fit into an already established team.

In particular we are looking for individuals who are eager to develop into a senior role as Company Stage Manager.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To call each performance;
  • To create and maintain an up-to-date prompt copy, to include blocking, any script changes, all technical cues and any other relevant information (such as contingencies);
  • To work closely with the Company Stage Manager and Resident Director to schedule and co-ordinate rehearsals and ensure the rehearsal room or stage is set-up appropriately prior to their commencement;
  • To deputise for the Company Stage Manager where necessary for Sickness and Holiday cover;
  • To teach the book to all book-covers;
  • To operate Sound (QLab) for the performances and rehearsals, prep the one microphone for each performance and, alongside the in-building team, troubleshoot any immediate issues;
  • To take part in the preset with the rest of the SM Team, the DSM also has some interval reset cues;
  • To assist the Company Manager in compiling show paperwork including but not limited to rehearsal calls, rehearsal / show reports, cue sheets and other paperwork relative to the prompt copy;
  • To ensure all stage management equipment and areas are kept in a tidy and secure manner.
  • Work collaboratively with all other departments, including the theatre technical team, to ensure the smooth running of the production;
  • Learn all plots/tracks within your department in order to provide absence cover for other members of your department where necessary;
  • To assist the SM team with weekly maintenance;
  • To lead and facilitate Cast Change rehearsals for the incoming company alongside CSM and Associate and Resident Director.
  • Any other reasonable duty that would normally fall within the remit of a Deputy Stage Manager based on industry norms and practice.

 

Person Specification:

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written with excellent attention to detail.
  • Have proven experience of covering a more senior role, such as CSM.
  • Leadership skills.
  • A proactive and flexible attitude.
  • An understanding of comic timing.
  • Experience working with actors and creative teams and the ability to manage expectations.
  • Discretion and sensitivity when dealing with confidential information.
  • The ability to work under pressure and effectively prioritise.
  • Knowledge of SOLT and Equity union agreements.
  • Awareness of current Health & Safety legislation.
