Creative and cultural industries

The creative and cultural industries are a great asset to the UK and its economy, growing at double the rate of the wider economy. London’s creative and cultural industries alone generate over £58bn a year. The term refers to a broad collection of work across: advertising and marketing; architecture; design, including product, graphic and fashion design; film, TV, video, radio and photography; museums, galleries and libraries; music, performing and visual arts; and publishing.

Over a quarter of the UK's creative jobs are based in London and most are highly skilled. This bodes well for those who join the creative and cultural industries for a long-term career but highlights the importance of ensuring the industries are open to all.  This toolkit addresses the challenges specific to this industry. For example, unpaid internships remain widespread and act as a barrier to those whose families cannot financially support them.

How to use this toolkit

This toolkit is designed to support organisations within the creative and cultural industries of differing sizes and at different stages in their EDI strategy. Not every intervention or action will be appropriate for your organisation, and we have organised the actions to take this into account.

Step 1

Click on the toolkit below which corresponds with your organisation size.

Step 2

Begin by reviewing the overview of actions recommended for your organisation size. You can then explore more detail, case studies and further resources on these actions through each of the five areas of the toolkit.

Step 3

Create a checklist of the actions your organisation will focus on in the next 30, 60, 90 days. Prioritise actions labelled “foundational” where you have not yet implemented them. Use the information on about each action to create a plan tailored to your organisation.
