Job Specification
‘Woke Songs’ draws on experiences of the South West’s queer youth and its rich heritage of folk music to create a new canon of songs and ultimately a musical, relevant to the narratives of young people living today. The project will be guided by the youth participants and is firmly focused on amplifying their voices and delivering their message.
‘Woke Songs’ is a new musical that is being devised by Mich Sanderson and Ryan Wilce. This is a verbatim project engaging with young people, the words of whom will ultimately shape the production, which will be a solo musical built up of verbatim dialogue and re-written folk music.
The creative team are looking for an Actor-Musician to deliver this solo show who is able to play one or more stock folk instruments, i.e. Fiddle, Banjo, Mandolin, Guitar etc.
Auditions – Early December
Rehearsals – 22nd January to 28th January (inclusive)
Performance – 28th January
The performance is a work-in-progress showing of between 20-30 minutes, with the aim for the project to have a longer life after the work-in-progress performance.
As this is a devised verbatim piece, the character is not yet formed, however we do know that it will be a solo performance with the performer required to deliver dialogue and perform 4 folk songs, mixed between live playing and singing to backing track.
We are interested in hearing from Actor-Musicians from the LGBTQ+ community, and those based in the South West region, particularly those local to Salisbury / Wiltshire, and areas across the region to Bristol.
Application Details
Please send a CV and a 1 minute clip of you performing folk music and a separate 1 minute clip of you performing any contemporary monologue to Jenny Cooper by 5pm 12th December.
This can be a spotlight link if it includes the above.
