Nominations are now open for the Hearts for the Arts Awards 2019. The Awards are a celebration of cultural champions within Local Authorities and the projects that place the arts at the centre of community life.
There are four annual Hearts For The Arts Awards. The Awards are an initiative of the National Campaign for the Arts, an organisation that campaigns for greater public investment in the arts to improve the lives of people across the UK. The awards are delivered by UK Theatre, and judged by a panel of esteemed figures in the arts (this year’s judges to be announced).
From 12 September until voting closes on 2 November, members of the public, arts professionals and local authorities can visit the Awards webpage to put nominations forward for the following categories:
- Best Local Authority Arts Initiative
- Local Authority Arts Project Encouraging Community Cohesion
- Best Local Authority Arts Champion – Councillor
- Best Local Authority Arts Champion – Officer
The awards will be presented by Samuel West, actor and Chair of the NCA, at the Local Government Association’s Culture, Tourism and Sport Conference. Winners will be offered a complimentary place at the conference which is the largest annual gathering of councillors and officers involved with culture, tourism and sport.
In addition, Samuel West has offered to speak at a Council meeting of each recipient, accompanied by a celebrated fellow performer or creative with a local connection.
Samuel West said:
‘In times when local authorities face difficult financial decisions, it is vital to recognise the work of those councils and council workers committed to putting culture at the heart of their community. Our aim in showcasing their hard work and imagination is always to encourage others to do the same, and keep the spirit of community arts alive in this country.’
The 2019 Hearts For The Arts Awards will be delivered in partnership with Culture Counts; Local Government Association (LGA); TheatreNI; Voluntary Arts Wales; Wales Council for Voluntary Action and What Next?.
