Deputy Head of Electrics
The Deputy Head of Electrics will assist the Heads of Department and Technical & Buildings Manager with the day to day running of the theatre from a technical perspective and will report to the Head of Electrics. You will assist with get-ins, fit-ups and get-outs of new productions and visiting events when they occur, as well as assisting with the upkeep of the theatre.
This is an exciting opportunity to get stuck into the substantial task of renewing and improving the Piccadilly theatre, as part of Piccadilly Technical, the theatre’s in-house Tech team. The task of transforming the Piccadilly is a years-long vision, turning it into world-class venue which is really fit to support giant productions for decades to come. We have come some way on that journey already, but there is still much work to do. Currently hosting Moulin Rouge! The Musical, for the duration of this production, tech departments from the production are responsible for the running of performances each night, while the purpose of Piccadilly Technical is to be the guardians of the theatre. The essence of the role of Deputy Head of Electrics is in supporting the Head of Electrics to deliver on a wide range of tasks and disciplines. This includes planning and executing infrastructure projects, providing production with the best technical support, managing the day-to-day running of the theatre, overseeing the maintenance of electrical, Fire & Security, HVAC and BMS systems, liaising with contractors and overseeing PPM visits, whilst also ensuring the building is always safe and compliant.
You will be working in a fast-paced environment, with no two days the same. There will be opportunities to support work across our West End estate of theatres. This role involves regular evening and weekend work.
Key Responsibilities
Technical
- Assist the HODs and Technical & Buildings Manager with get-in, fit-up and get-outs of all productions and events, ensuring all team members behave in a safety conscious manner
- Carry out your duties in line with all risk assessments and method statements relating to the production and venue
- Duty Tech responsibilities – a minimum of one Duty Electrician and one Duty Stage are required per performance. These duties will be shared between the Head of Electrics and Deputy Head of Electrics.
- Fire Marshal responsibilities – as part of Duty Tech responsibilities, the role of Fire Marshal is covered by the Piccadilly Tech Team, with daily Fire Marshal checks to complete
- As and when required, work across ATGEs West End estate, assisting with the get-ins, fit-ups, and get-outs of productions, alongside supporting with the maintenance of the buildings
- Assist adjacent technical department with inspections and maintenance on stage equipment, including LOLER and insurance inspections, safety curtain and grid inspections
- Liaising with production to ensure compliance with BS7909 and BS7671
Compliance and maintenance
- Working with the HODs and Technical & Buildings Manager to implement a comprehensive maintenance plan for the building, ensuring it is always compliant and presented to the highest possible standard
- Maintaining permanent electrical systems, including upgrading older systems, fault finding, installing new systems, and managing the EICR Fixed Wire Inspections by third party contractors to keep the whole building compliant with up-to-date BS7671 electrical regulations and standards
- Keeping the building lit – regular lamp-rounds and maintenance of lighting systems
- PAT testing production and venue equipment
- Managing and running a complex BMS (Building Management System), including keeping the auditorium and stage at a suitable temperature and monitoring system alarms
- Carrying out weekly and monthly checks and tests, including Fire Alarm and Emergency Lighting tests
- Planning, project managing and where appropriate carrying out refurbishment projects and building upgrades
- Basic maintenance on plumbing essentials such as sinks and toilets, HVAC systems (Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning) and co-ordinating PPMs and remedials by third-party contractors
- Manage visiting third-party contractors, following the Contractor Management Policy, to ensure all visitors operate in a safety conscious, responsible and respectful manner
Health and Safety
- Working with the Technical & Buildings Manager, HODs and Theatre Management team to ensure all technical operations meet with current legislation, industry best practice and ATG Entertainment policies and procedures
- Ensure that all relevant processes are completed to an agreed standard and documented
- Generate and review risk assessments relating to all technical activity as and when required, including visiting productions and company within the building
- Implement all aspects of ATGE’s RMS (Risk Management System)
- Actively contribute to the annual health and safety audit and fire risk assessment ensuring all relevant actions are implemented within the assigned timeframe
- Attend health and safety meetings and actively contribute to lowering the risk associated with theatre activities
Staff Development, Training and Relationships
- Ensure training is kept up to date and keep up with relevant industry training, highlighting new opportunities as and when the arise
- Attend all necessary compliance, safety and technical training relating to your role
- Actively lead on your own personal development
- Establish and maintain productive relationships with various stakeholders across the Company, including other HODs with the theatre and Central Operations Team

Essential
- Experience working backstage in production roles, fit-ups and/or in-house technical roles
- Experience working with electrics, on either temporary or permanent installations, or both
- Good communicator and team player
- Experience writing and reviewing RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements) and following health and safety policy
- A basic understanding of HVAC systems, Fire and Security systems and BMS
- A solid understanding of good Health and Safety practice
- Confident in IT and computer skills
- Competent using hand tools and power tools
- Competent working at height using various pieces of access equipment e.g. fixed and portable ladders
Desirable
- Electrical Installations to level 2 or 3 (City & Guilds or EAL)
- 18th Edition qualification
- Qualification in BS7909 Temporary Electrical Systems
- Working at Height qualification
- IOSH certificate
- Experience in production electrics
- Experience operating/programming lighting and sound control systems
- Competent in basic plumbing and carpentry tasks
