About the role
The Deputy Head of Lighting is responsible for facilitating and ensuring the smooth-running of ENB’s productions to a high standard, in line with technical requirements across lighting, video and sound. You will work to support the Head of Lighting and the Technical Director in the effective management of the department, whilst also supervising and coaching new and casual staff in lighting.
You will be responsible for electrics and lighting at both ENB sites, the Mulryan Centre for Dance and Marden, and work on-site at national and international performance venues, as required. By keeping up to date with safety procedures and statutory regulations, you will ensure compliance personally and departmentally, whilst endeavouring to develop technical expertise and specialised knowledge where necessary.
Your main responsibilities as Deputy Head of Lighting will include:
- Provide support in rigging, focusing, programming and the operation of lighting systems for rehearsal and performance to ensure high standards are maintained.
- Support the Head of Lighting in the load-in, set up, and strike of lighting, video, and sound systems in touring contexts, liaising with local venue technical teams to ensure smooth integration of company requirements.
- Plan and supervise the maintenance and testing of all lighting equipment, lighting infrastructure and all electrical equipment at the warehouse to ensure it complies with current regulations.
- Ensure all work is carried out to the highest standards of safety and professionalism.
- Plan and manage own and technician team workload, capacity and workflows to support productivity and effective resource management.
- Support the Head of Lighting in leading the lighting team, including technicians, freelance technicians and venue crews, undertaking the training of new and casual staff as required.
- Contribute to a progressive approach to the work of the lighting team, keeping up to date with best practice and current developments relevant to the role and the sector.
Key Selection Criteria
- Professional experience in large-scale theatre, dance company, or national and international touring productions, running lighting fit ups, get outs & technical rehearsals.
- Thorough understanding and experience of health and safety management on productions and a commitment to safe working practices, and strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Thorough knowledge of ETC Eos/Apex lighting systems, and experience with a range of control and networking systems, including the use of midi, timecode etc.
- Track record of delivering work to a high standard within a demanding schedule, able to demonstrate good judgement and prioritisation, with the ability to interpret artistic requirements confidently and sensitively.
- A good track record of relationship management with key stakeholders, and a proven ability to lead teams under pressure in complex technical environments.
