Job Description

The Stage Department is a full-time team of 4, plus casual stage crew.  Working alongside the Head of Stage, the Deputy Head of Stage is responsible for delivering all stage elements on REP produced productions, incoming productions and events.

Main duties and responsibilities

The role main duties and responsibilities of the role are:

  • To be responsible for the efficient running of all get-ins and get-outs, including the safe installation, operation and removal of all rigging, scenic elements, flooring, masking and special effects.
  • To work on performances.
  • To maintain performances, ensuring the productions continued adherence to its creator’s original design.
  • To support other Technical Departments with the creation of new Rep productions.
  • Working with the Head of Stage to liaise with visiting companies and our events teams regarding the requirements for visiting productions, conferences, hires.
  • Install and operate stage equipment for The Rep productions, visiting companies and conferences including, traps, hoists and flying system.
  • Maintain all stage equipment both on a day-to-day and formalised scheduled programme.
  • To work to design and installation deadlines as per production and technical schedules as set by the Head of Stage.
  • Liaise with the Head of Stage and with the Creative Learning team to create opportunities for access and learning throughout the organisation.
  • To liaise with other departments regarding audio-described, captioned and signed performances.
  • To carry out other technical duties or projects as reasonably required by the Head of Stage.
  • Liaise closely with other departments to ensure efficient and effective completion of tasks and working patterns
  • Work alongside the Head of Stage to generate ideas / projects for the better running and / or improvement of the Production department at The Rep
  • To ensure excellent customer service is maintained at all times
  • Ensure the departments functions are conducted within the parameters, budgetary or otherwise, as set out by the Head of Stage.
  • Deputise for the Head of Stage to ensure representation at all Design, Progress, Production and Departmental meetings, as well as other meetings as required.
  • Keep pace with technical developments and undertake further training and development as required.
  • Ensure that a high standard of housekeeping prevails in all departmental areas.
  • Work alongside the Head of Stage to actively embrace and seek to embed digital solutions to presenting work and to developing work flows across the department.
  • Ensure that sustainable methods of delivering on all output are considered, developed and implemented where possible.
  • Work with the Head of Stage to support and actively participate in The Rep’s apprenticeship schemes
  • Any other duties as reasonably requested by the Head of Stage to ensure the smooth running of the Stage department.

Communication & Administration

  • Ensure detailed records are maintained for all equipment
  • Ensure show files and any relevant records are archived

Finance

  • Comply with The Rep’s financial policies and procedures and work with the Head of Stage maintain budgets and resources accordingly

Health & Safety

  • Work closely with the Head of Stage and other Birmingham Rep team members and consultants to maintain a safe working environment, update risk assessments, keeping maintenance records up to date and ensure method statements or safe systems of work are implemented and that appropriate training has been completed
  • Be an on-duty First Aider

Key relationships

This role forms part of the Stage team. This role reports to the Head of Stage and deputises in managing the Stage Team including;

  • Senior Stage Technician, Stage Technician. and casual stage staff.

This structure may change from time to time based on business need but reflects the broad areas of responsibility.

Person specification

You must have

If you do not demonstrate that you meet all these criteria you may not be shortlisted.

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a producing theatre.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of operating a counterweight fly system for both Get-In/Out and show flying.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience of rigging including rigging points, safely operating hoists and using ropes/knots.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills, both written and verbal.
  • Knowledge of current Health and Safety guidance and practice and practical implementation
  • Great problem solver.
  • Good carpentry and metal working skills.
  • Extensive experience, knowledge and understanding of the theatrical technical industry and in particular technical products, equipment and systems.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience in stage work & rigging.
  • Ability to lead, manage and motivate a team.
  • Ability to work under pressure while managing time effectively, meeting deadlines and continue to pay close attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to and experience of working at height and in using a broad range of access equipment.
  • Computer literate and practical experience of using Teams, Word, Excel (or equivalent) and AutoCAD
  • Ability to work from scale drawings.
  • Experience of liaising with creative teams and ability to interpret design concepts into an achievable outcome.
  • First aid certification
  • Working at height certification
  • Positive outlook and a flexible approach to working, including unsociable hours.

Terms & Conditions

Deputy Head of Stage

Period of work

This is a permanent contract, subject to successful completion of a probationary period of three months.

Pay
£31,742 per annum (Salary Grade: Manager 1)

Hours
2028 hours per year (equivalent to 39 hours a week). Some evening and weekend work will be required.

You will be entitled to double time hours for Sundays & Bank Holidays and these will be added to your Toil. You will still be able to claim for auxiliary payments (get outs and meal allowances)

Holidays

20 days per year plus public holidays, increasing to 25 days with service

The holiday year runs from 1 September to 31 August each year.

Notice period

The notice period will be 8 weeks.

Location

Your main place of work will be The Rep in Birmingham, but you may be required to work permanently or temporarily at other locations locally. You may be asked to work temporarily in other locations in the UK.  The role may involve some international travel.
