Responsible for radio mic running, show rigging and show operation. You will have experience of setting up sound systems, ideally of running radio mics and be familiar with show control systems such as Qlab.

Fixed Term

£640 per week + subs where applicable (average 48 hour week)

Our Sound Technicians provide first-class support to visiting creative teams working with the full-time Head of
Sound and Deputy, as well as seasonal senior sound engineers, trainees and apprentices – undertaking rigging, operation and radio mic running on productions in all CFT venues.

Key responsibilities

  • Work as directed in the setting up and operating of performances and of general maintenance as required
    Programme and operate sound control systems during rehearsals and performances
  • Fitting and maintaining radio microphones, running mic plots and supporting show cues.
  • Receive, collect and load/off-load sound and ancillary equipment as required
  • Collect and return equipment from and to storage areas and store equipment in an organised manner
  • Participate in Get-ins, Fit-ups, rehearsals, performance changeovers and Get-outs
  • Ensure that sound and communications equipment is deployed in a clean, orderly and tidy condition, take appropriate care of all items and ensure that the sound department, studio and workshop, control rooms and sound storage areas are kept clean and tidy
  • Prepare and maintain accurate plots and records detailing all aspects of productions and other performance-related equipment to enable the accurate reproduction of a production’s sound requirements
  • Ensure that appropriate sound reproduction system back-ups are implemented
  • Carry out first-line maintenance of all production sound and related equipment, in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations and training received in liaison with the Head of Sound
  • Participate in a programme of fault finding, repair and maintenance of departmental equipment
  • Take a proactive and supportive approach to working with apprentices and junior
    staff members
  • Undertake training as required; instructing others in the use of technical equipment
  • Appear on stage in appropriate clothes or costume in order to carry out specific sound effects or cues when required
  • General knowledge and awareness of Health and Safety policy and procedures and its implications for both work colleagues and within technical areas and environments
  • Use computers for documentation plots and plans
  • Undertake Portable Appliance Testing further to CFT training as required
  • Wear protective clothing and footwear when required
  • Ensure that equipment is left in a safe and secure condition at the end of each performance
  • Work collaboratively to reach the relevant Theatre Green Book standard benchmark on productions and be sustainably minded in all decisions
  • Essential Criteria
  • Knowledge of fundamental audio practice and theory
  • Experience of using and fitting radio microphones to performers and running radio mic systems and plots
  • Experience in theatre sound, including the rigging and focusing of speakers, and other equipment, ideally but not essentially within a producing environment
  • Experience of programming and operating sound control systems
  • Experience of technical theatre in a producing environment
  • A sympathetic approach to creative concepts and the ability to realise the requirements of Sound Designers, Designers and Directors
  • Ability to be self-motivated and work well as part of a team under minimum supervision
  • Ability to work at height using appropriate access equipment safely
  • Excellent punctuality and good time management
  • An open mind to new and different ways of working and the ability to acquire new skills when needed
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Ability to plan and prioritise work effectively
  • Good communication skills
  • Commitment to finding innovative and reliable solutions to the challenges of design and delivery of the company’s work

  • A practical knowledge of LOLER, PUWER and other relevant Health and Safety regulations
  • Commitment to achieving high standards with the resources available
  • Experience of Health & Safety practice and procedures
  • Technical drawing skills
  • Formal technical theatre qualification
