Review of technical qualifications can improve pathways into theatre industry

Responding to the announcement that the UK Government will be reviewing technical qualifications, SOLT & UK Theatre Co-CEO Hannah Essex said,

“We welcome the Government’s decision to pause and review reforms of technical qualifications. Strengthening technical education routes into the theatre sector via this review is key to addressing our significant skills gaps and shortages. This, in turn, can boost the contribution our sector can make to the Government’s missions to kick-start the economy and break down the barriers to opportunity.

“SOLT & UK Theatre will work to ensure the review delivers more flexible apprenticeships, which are crucial to improving pathways in the theatre sector. Our members would also welcome more skills bootcamps that provide free training in areas where there are significant employment opportunities. Ensuring there are multiple routes into a career in theatre will build resilience in the industry’s workforce, which is essential to creating the conditions for theatre to thrive.

“Skills gaps and shortages will only be fully addressed through a cohesive education and skills system.  We look forward to seeing how this reform of technical qualifications will be joined up with the recently announced curriculum review and the work of Skills England.”
