SOLT & UK Theatre respond to UK Government’s Creative Industries Sector Plan

The Society of London Theatre (SOLT) and UK Theatre welcome the UK Government’s designation of music, performing arts and visual arts as one of the UK’s “frontier industries” with high growth potential in the newly published Creative Industries Sector Plan. We also welcome the reaffirmation of Theatre Tax Relief as a key support for the sector.

However, while this designation acknowledges the scale, reach and ambition of theatre and the performing arts, the Plan includes no new interventions to address the sector’s most pressing challenges. To realise the growth potential identified, further targeted investment and policy action will be essential.

Claire Walker, Co‑CEO of SOLT & UK Theatre, said:

“We are privileged to witness the extraordinary work that theatres across the UK create on stage, while delivering profound impact off stage – from engaging communities and boosting local economies to training the talent that powers our wider creative industries.

“The designation of our sector as a frontier industry confirms what we already know: theatre is one of our greatest national assets. It entertains, educates and connects – driving growth, innovation and opportunity across every part of the country.

“But recognition must lead to action. Theatres are facing rising costs, ageing infrastructure and workforce challenges. Addressing these pressures must begin with a renewed commitment to creative education in schools as the foundation for closing the sector’s growing skills gap, alongside capital investment in theatre buildings as part of the Government’s 10-year infrastructure strategy.

“We look forward to further discussions with Government on how best to realise the potential identified in this Plan – ensuring theatre continues to thrive and lead as part of the UK’s creative future.”
