SOLT & UK Theatre welcome ban on ticket touting

The Society of London Theatre and UK Theatre welcome the Government’s proposals to ban ticket resale above the original price paid and to cap platform service fees.

Industrial-scale touting has distorted the market for too long. Tying the cap to the actual price paid, and limiting additional fees will help protect audiences, reduce exploitation, and support a more transparent ticketing environment.

Theatres already work hard to keep prices fair. These measures will help ensure audiences are not priced out by speculative resellers or hidden platform costs.

We look forward to working with Government on clear guidance, effective enforcement, and trusted routes for consumers to buy and resell tickets safely.

Co-CEO of SOLT & UK Theatre, Claire Walker, said:

“Today’s announcement is good news for audiences. Theatres across the UK strive to offer fair and accessible pricing, and industrial-scale touting has long undermined that effort.

“Setting the cap at the original price paid, together with limits on additional fees, will help restore trust in the market and ensure fans are not paying inflated prices to third-party resellers.

“We will continue to support Government in delivering a system that puts audiences first, with clear rules, strong enforcement, and safe, transparent ways to buy and exchange tickets.”
