Set in Leeds, 1989, Michael struggles with the pressures of individuality while being infatuated with Vanessa, a young drag performer. Inside the underground nightclubs of Leeds, we meet fabulous characters who compete in elaborate categories to win glittering trophies to fulfil their inner fantasies as they’re socially shunned from the rest of the world. What if Michael’s determination for love is more dangerous than good? From colourful garments to Vogue dancing, ‘I AM BEAUTIFUL’ explores LGBTQ+ Ballroom Culture bounded with sexuality, gender, corruption and AIDS.
