The Chief Executive reports to the Board and has overall responsibility for the success of Northern Stage.
They ensure that opportunities to generate essential income are maximised and that the resources of Northern Stage are managed effectively and efficiently in pursuit of our mission, aims and values. They lead on strategic planning, stakeholder management and advocacy.
They are the custodian of the reputation of the company and strive to embody it.
The Chief Executive has line management responsibility for the Artistic Director, as well as the Interim Deputy Chief Executive, the Finance Director and the Heads of Department. The Chief Executive has a particular role to enable and support the Artistic Director in their development and the delivery of the artistic vision, strategy and programme, within agreed income and expenditure commitments. On all matters relating to the artistic vision, strategy and programme, the Artistic Director reports to the Board as well as to the Chief Executive. They attend all Board meetings to represent and be accountable for the essence of the company’s work and the income and expenditure responsibility that go with that.
The Chief Executive works in close collaboration with the Artistic Director to realise the theatre’s artistic ambition, so that the broad artistic and engagement programmes reflect Northern Stage’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, environmental sustainability, ambition and excellence, whilst ensuring the financial well-being of the company. Together, the Chief Executive and the Artistic Director nurture and influence the organisational culture of Northern Stage to ensure that it is in harmony with the ethos of the work that appears on our stages.
