Responding to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s Review of Statutory Consultees Society of London Theatre (SOLT) & UK Theatre Co-CEO Claire Walker said:
“Theatres and cultural venues are the beating heart of our communities and protecting them is essential to ensuring fair access to the arts for all. We are proud to work alongside the Theatres Trust to safeguard and support theatre buildings across the country, so that current and future generations can be inspired by and enjoy live performance.
“As acknowledged in the Government’s industrial strategy, theatre and the creative industries are also powerful drivers of economic growth. For every £1 spent on a theatre ticket, an additional £1.40 is spent on the local high street.
“However, our research shows that without investment, four in ten theatres risk closing or becoming too unsafe to use within five years. The Government has recognised the importance of protecting these spaces – something the Culture Secretary reaffirmed when announcing new funds to restore buildings ‘that stand at the centre of our communities.’
“We fully support the Government’s ‘Get Britain Building’ mission, however this must include provisions for the arts to ensure theatres remain a vital part of our towns and cities.”
