We are looking for a talented Deputy Head of Stage to work alongside the Head of Stage and deliver all scenic and staging aspects of 14 productions across our main stage and studio every year. The Deputy Head of Stage is heavily involved with building scenery, running the workshop, supervising teams of casual technicians and stage maintenance.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES 

  • Assist the Head of Stage & freelance Production Managers with all productions & events planning, staffing and fulfilment.
  • Deputise for the Head of Stage in their absence.
  • Modify and/or build scenic elements for shows as required by the Head of Stage / agreed production requirements.
  • Support the Head of Stage to maintain a functional, safe and compliant workshop at all times.
  • Oversee get-in and get-out of Stage department equipment across the venue as agreed with the Head of Stage.
  • Support the daily operation of shows as required by the Head of Stage.
  • Support the Head of Stage to ensure that Hampstead Stage department equipment is maintained to a safe and compliant standard and ready for use as required.
  • Provide excellent communication and support to creatives and production professionals working at Hampstead Theatre.
  • Assist with additional tasks on stage and across the venue as required.
  • Oversee the implementation of production Health & Safety requirements in planning and on stage.

  • Work in a safe and legal way to comply with regulatory and legislative requirements.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Our Deputy Head of Stage should be:

Knowledge  

  • Excellent knowledge and experience of current theatre stage production practice.
  • Good knowledge of current theatrical stage and rigging practice.
  • Good knowledge of theatrical scenic, making and installation techniques.
  • Good practical making and repair skills.
  • Good knowledge of stage systems, including stage lifts, counterweight flying and rigging systems.
  • Good working knowledge of Health & Safety practice relevant to the role.

Skills 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent technical skills relevant to the work.
  • Good ability to interpret and work from technical drawings.
  • Good stage carpentry skills.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Good numeracy skills.
  • A working knowledge of metal work.
  • A working knowledge of CAD software.

Experience  

  • Experience of installing theatrical rigging in a range of scenarios.
  • Experience of working with Counterweight or Hemp flying systems.
  • Experience of working with stage effects and automation.
  • Experience of stage systems repair and maintenance experience.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with Set Designers and Production Managers.
  • Experience of running stage crews at a supervisory level, including get-ins and get-outs.
  • Experience of safe working at height practice.
  • Experience of working with risk assessments and method statements for safe working.

Qualifications 

  • IPAF 1A or 3A and Harness & Rescue (training can be provided in post).
  • PASMA desirable
  • IOSH Managing Safely desirable.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

Salary: £36,500 p.a. plus overtime *

Hours: This is a full-time position.  A normal working week consists of 43 hours.  Additional work hours, Sunday work and overnight work will be required during production periods, for which overtime is payable.  The schedule is based on operational needs whilst also aiming to ensure work-life balance.

Holiday: 28 days’ annual leave plus Public Holidays.

Notice: One week during three-month probationary period, eight weeks after probation is passed.
