The Lighting Technician (Grade 4) is to assist with the effective realisation of the lighting design for National Theatre productions and events. This work may be carried out on any of the National’s stages, relevant working areas, and at designated outside venues on tour.
Lighting Technicians are required to rig, focus, and maintain lighting rigs and operate lighting control systems on National Theatre productions. Working closely with the theatre’s supervisors and lighting designers to achieve this.
Our lighting technicians are required to be flexible in their approach and understanding of the demands of the modern theatrical environment. They will be regularly required to operate on our shows in all roles, including desk operation, follow spot and floor LX.
The successful candidate will have the following:
- Proven experience in professional theatre, ideally in a producing house or equivalent
- The ability to diagnose and rectify faults on lighting equipment and control systems in a systematic and methodical manner
- Industry recognised certificates in rigging, working at height, Health & Safety and electrical awareness or the willingness to undertake training to achieve them
- A good working knowledge of fundamental electrical practice and theory. A qualification in BS7909 or the willingness to undergo the training required to achieve this
- Excellent communication skills and ideally experience of working with Lighting Designers on large scale productions – with a sympathetic approach to creative concepts and the ability to realise the requirements of Lighting Designers, Designers and Directors
