The Sound No.2 is an integral role in the technical delivery and daily running of The Choir of Man, supporting the sound department and maintaining the highest standards across our audio and instrument setup.

 

Key Responsibilities

The Sound No.2 is responsible for the maintenance and operation of sound equipment and musical instruments, following the Sound No.1’s specification, and for ensuring the sound image of the production is delivered accurately and consistently in line with the Sound Designer’s vision. They will also step up to mix the show as required.

Core duties include:

  • Supporting the Sound No.1 in all aspects of the sound department’s work
  • Deputising for the Sound No.1, including mixing live performances when scheduled
  • Conducting daily checks to ensure all sound equipment and instruments are clean, fully functional, and performance-ready
  • Fitting and changing mics for performers and troubleshooting any mic-related issues
  • Maintaining accurate cue sheets, sound reference documents, and technical notes
  • Preparing and adjusting sound equipment based on daily cast changes in liaison with Company Management and Resident Artistic staff
  • Attending technical, dress, and understudy rehearsals as required
  • Take full ownership of the maintenance and care of all show instruments, ensuring they are at optimal condition. This includes promptly logging and resolving any issues as they arise.
  • Liaise as needed with local suppliers (e.g. luthiers and specialist repair technicians) and act as the primary point of contact for all instrument-related matters on behalf of the production.
  • Responding to and resolving emergency equipment faults or issues during performances
  • Supporting pre- or post-production operations, including kit management, logistics, and freelance crew coordination
  • Ensuring all sound and instrument-related storage is kept tidy, safe, and secure
  • Upholding safety standards and complying with all health & safety policies and venue protocols

Skills & Characteristics

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other departments and crew members
  • Ability to remain calm, focused, and efficient under pressure in a live performance environment
  • Solid working knowledge of sound equipment and live audio systems
  • Confident in re-stringing and maintaining musical instruments.
  • Strong understanding of a range of live instruments and the maintenance they require.
  • Good knowledge of West End theatre operations and expectations
  • Awareness of and adherence to relevant health and safety regulations, particularly when working with electrical and audio equipment
